13. Death – Major Changes are Coming

Get ready for major changes, and a new way of doing things.

Hades the son of Cronus and Rhea was rescued by his brother Zeus and given the kingdom of the underworld over which to rule.   He now stands shrouded in a black cloak, his face covered by a helmet,   his hands open ready to receive the gifts offered by the three figures below.  The small child offers a flower the woman offers a crown and the man offers coins.

When someone enters Hades kingdom they do not return.  This card represents the end of a cycle.  However there is no reason for fear, when you get this card it means that an old way of life is ending and leaving the way open for new opportunities.


You are about to experience significant changes in your life some may occur unexpectedly.   You need to accept these changes and understand they are a necessary part of life in order to make way for change.

Once you let go of any unhealthy attachments that no longer serve you, you can make way for new energies to come in.  Let go of old ways of life and any bad habits that no longer serve you.


If you are looking for love there is a major change coming, however it is time to purge yourself of baggage you are still carrying from a previous relationship.    Once this happens you will be truly open to accepting new love into your life.


In a new relationship both you and your partner have come into this new partnership after a period of change.  You are both ready to explore new possibilities as a couple.

12. The Hanged Man

A time for waiting.

Prometheus is a titan who sympathised with humans; he defied Zeus by taking the element of fire and giving it to humankind even though he knew he would be punished for his deed.  He gave humans the gift of fire so they could experience enlightenment.

Zeus punished him by chaining him upside down to cliffs.  For the next 30 years Prometheus hung suspended.  Every day the eagle flew down and devoured Prometheus liver, each night his liver regenerated.  After 30 years he was rescued by Ares and given the gift of eternal life.

This card speaks of inner sacrifice.  It is telling us it is time to wait patiently and without foresight, for the next chapter of our life to unfold.  Sometimes mystics refer to this time as the ‘Dark Knight of the Soul’.

If this card appears it is telling you it is time to let go of something meaningful, it could be an attitude, value or even a material object, it is a time for waiting for the next chapter in your life to unfold.

It may be time to take a new path however this path has not yet been revealed, so wait patiently be mindful of what is going on around you.


Decisions or plans may be delayed or postponed.   This may seem frustrating, however these delays will be beneficial for you.  In fact if you are able to delay any decisions at this stage it will be beneficial to you.    If you are feeling stuck or restricted let go and surrender to your current circumstances.  Accept that somethings are out of your control.  Once you let go of old ideas and values new pathways will present themselves.

The hangman describes someone with the patience and the ability to make sacrifices for the higher good.  This person is also very giving of their time; you may find them working in voluntary organisations serving others.

11. Justice – Mythic Tarot

Something needs to be dealt with diplomatically

Athena, Zeus’ favourite daughter, sits on her throne holding a sword in her right hand.  An owl sits on her left shoulder.  Owls represent wisdom and femininity, reflecting Athena’s clarity of vision.   In her left hand she holds the scales representing the ability to weigh up both sides of an argument and make an impartial judgement.

Athena is a warrior and a master strategist.  She has high principles and recognises that war is sometimes necessary to preserve truth.   She is logical and diplomatic and known for her services to humans.

The Justice card represents the Fool’s first moral lesson.  He must now build his character ready to deal with life’s experiences and travels.  It is time for him to plan and learn diplomacy and tact rather than aggression.

In a reading the Justice informs you that there is something that needs to be dealt with diplomatically.


Justice is an indicator that the fairest decision will be made in a situation that concerns you.   For example if you were in the middle of a legal problem the outcome will be fair and balanced.   Events will work out as they are meant to for you.

Decisions have consequences on your present and future circumstances.   It also indicates that your future can be changed by re-evaluating your current situation.

10. The Wheel of Fortune

You are on the right track

Three women cloaked in black, surround a spinning wheel.  One sits on the floor with a ball of twine feeding it to the one standing on the left of the card, an older woman stands on the right the holding shears.   These tree women (referred to as Moirai) are the goddesses of fate (representing growth fear and death).

In the centre of the card is a golden wheel.    On the wheel are four men one at the top, one on his way down, one underneath and one on his way up.  These four figures represent four levels of fortune from success to down on his luck to moving climbing up or falling.

The wheel is in a dark cave representing the womb that gives us life and the grave to which we return.  We can see the entrance of this cave.  Outside the sun is shining on the lush green hills, representing the clarity of vision needed on our journey through life.

When the wheel appears in a reading it could be an indicator that there is a karmic reason behind a seemingly random event.  This could indicate a sudden change in your fortunes or an event in your which will lead to personal growth.  The event could be positive or negative depending on the position that it appears in your reading.   Check the surrounding cards to work out where on the wheel you are.

If you are on the upside of the wheel.   You will experience change perhaps which brings about abundance and good fortune.

9. The Hermit

Wisdom comes from patience and time

The Hermit card features Cronos the youngest child of Uranus (heaven) and Gaea (earth).  Shrouded in a grey robe, his face partially hidden.  In his right hand he carries a lamp which symbolises clarity and direction which comes from time alone in reflection and patience.  In his left hand he holds a scythe representing the eternal cycles of time.  On his left shoulder perches a crow a symbolism of change or trial.

According to Greek Mythology Cronos’ brothers had been imprisoned in the underworld by their father.  Cronos used the scythe to castrate his father and free his brothers.  Once free the Cronos became sovereign of the earth.

This card serves as a reminder that wisdom comes from the patience and time.  It is the Fools final lesson, to have deep respect for his own limitations and the passage of time.

When this card appears in a reading it is telling you that it is time for solitude and searching the depths of your own inner wisdom.  Patience will bring you opportunities to build strong foundations for the future.

8. Strength – Mythic Tarot

Hercules kills the lion with his bare hands.

Heracles is a muscular man, who is standing in a cave fighting the lion.  His hair is dark ginger his beard untamed and wild.  Killing the lion which had been terrorising the countryside was a task set for him by King Eurystheus for the crimes he committed.  After attempting to kill the lion with a number of different weapons and failing, he resorted to trapping the lion and killing him with his bare hands

Unlike Ares in the Chariot Hermes knows he does not need to exert physical aggression in order to take control of a situation, he has learnt to use tenderness in order to persuade the lion.   He acts from a place of inner strength not fear.

The Fools Lesson – The Fool has now moved  through two challenges of youth: Sexual Desire portrayed by the Lovers Card, and Aggression portrayed by The Chariot.

When the Strength card appears in a reading you may be facing a situation in which creative handling of your own pride and desires are paramount to a good outcome.


This card tells you that you already have the strength within you to move through to the next stage of your life.  It is time to let go of lower level aggression and use your intuition and inner strength in a situation.

7. The Chariot – Mythic Tarot

Ares the god of war prepares for battle

Ares the god of war is on the move –  dressed in a gold helmet and gold tunic he is ready for battle.  Ares is violent, quick tempered and has an aggressive personality, which he struggles to control.  His horse’s one white and one black, represent the fear and terror  pulling him in opposite directions.  Behind Ares are reddish brown hills and the ground is hard and dry. The clouds suggest there is a storm brewing.

In a reading the Chariot can represent a struggle either our own inner conflicts or conflicts outside our selves. One thing is certain when the Chariot shows up in a reading the conflict must be faced. Once we come through this battle we will be stronger.

The Fools Lesson

If the Chariot appears at the beginning of a reading you may feel you are ready and raring to go with a new idea, however be cautious if you proceed with too much haste then you may make a mistake.  If the Chariot appears at the end of a reading you have learned this lesson and you are moving ahead. You need to overcome your emotions, and the struggles within using hard work and discipline over your emotions.


You are facing an emotional test, you are feeling as if you are overloaded or being pulled in two different directions. You need to have faith in yourself and your assertiveness in order to deal with this situation.

6. The Lovers – Mythic Tarot

The lovers is a card of desire and choice – not always happily ever after.

The Lovers Card in the Mythic Tarot depicts three Greek goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.   They ask Zeus to settle their dispute over which of them is the fairest.   Zeus couldn’t do it so he asked Hermes to find someone who could.  Hermes approached Paris a young teenager who was tending his stepfather’s garden to award the golden apple to the fairest goddess.

The three goddesses offered Paris a bribe.   Hera said she would make him king of Asia, while Aphrodite offered him power in war.   Aphrodite offered him marriage to the most beautiful sensual woman in the world.   Paris was young and chose beauty over all else, he married Aphrodite but later left her for Helen of Troy – sparking the Trojan wars.

This card is about choice, and for those of you hoping for happily ever after, look very closely at the surrounding cards in order to see the full picture.    This could indicate a relationship based on sexual desire, or being part of a love triangle in which you may not be the chosen party.

What Happens if You Choose the Lovers Card?


You will be faced with a dilemma which you will be unable to avoid.  This is a decision that will change the course of your life.   Although things may look negative on the surface a lot of good will come.

If you have been avoiding making a decision you can no longer bury your head in the sand it is time to take action.


You have a strong desire to find someone special, and you may find you have a strong connection to another.  However card warns you not to be hasty when considering the long term viability of a relationship.  You must carefully examine your own personal values and those of a potential partner before deciding whether to make a long term commitment.

Sometimes a person may appear in your life and you feel and instant  soul mate connection, however this does not mean it is meant to be.  There are a number of different types of soul mates, and they don’t all end in marriage:

  • Twin flame is a soul mate sent so that you can unite to serve god.
  • A true soulmate sent to you at birth who may be a close friend and someone you instantly bond with.
  • A karmic soulmate. This is someone who you may have unresolved karma with from a previous life; however you are only meant to be with this person a short time in order to repay karmic debt.   This could lead to a lot of pain.

Be aware if you are feeling passionate about someone you should take your time if it is a karmic soul mate you may find that you there will be something blocking this relationship  from moving forward   such as a third party.  They are here to teach you something and it is likely to end badly.

5. The Hierophant – Mythic Tarot

The Hierophant is represented by a centaur – half man half horse.  He stands in a cave holding a scroll in his left hand, representing wisdom and understanding.  The pointing finger and little finger on his right hand are pointing toward the roof in the old fashioned sign of a blessing.

The Hierophant represents a religious figure of the beginning of a spiritual quest, judging by the light shining through the roof of the cave if it is a divinely lead.  The Hierophant represents a time when The Fool emerges from the underworld to seek enlightenment.   This card often appears when the seeker is starting a spiritual quest to understand the deeper meaning of life.

The negative aspect of this card could be related to the negative side of organised religion such as power, greed and corruption.

General Reading

This card is very clear you need to follow the code of conduct for any organisation or group you are a part of, otherwise you risk being a rebel or out cast.    This is a time to follow the status quo.

It may be time to find a group of like-minded individuals in order to progress work or social opportunities.

You may take up studying in a formal institution such as a university, or about to embark on a spiritual quest to find your own understanding of god.

If you are going through a challenging time this card suggests you find a mentor, counsellor or spiritual advisor to guide you.

If this card falls in a negative position it is a warning that if you do not follow the status quo whether it is in work, relationships or social groups you are at risk of being shunned.

4. The Emperor – Mythic Tarot

The Emperor sits on a throne holding a globe of the world in one hand and lightening in the other.  He has a reddish brown beard.  He is dressed in a royal purple robe that covers his feet and wears a crown upon his head.   On his left shoulder sits a brown eagle.  The eagle is looking to the left (an invitation to follow his gaze), while the Emperors gaze is direct (a challenge).

The Hawk represents the ability to see a situation for from a higher perspective.  In this card he gazes toward the future.    He is inviting you to do the same, by trusting your own intuition.

The throne sits upon a creamy white rock like marble.  Behind him are snow-capped mountains, with a dark blue gully in between, representing the cool fresh mountain air.

This is a powerful confident man that holds the world in his hand.

General Reading

The Emperor represents an authority figure, or a father figure.  He is a protector and is extremely loyal to those that are loyal to him.  In a general reading this card indicates someone in a position of authority is looking out for you or protecting you in the situation.   Whether it indicates someone protecting you now or in the future depends on where it falls in the spread and the cards surrounding it.

At the beginning of a reading this card indicates change will occur because you are in a hurry.  As an outcome card there are new opportunities coming that will lead to success.

In a positive position this card indicates you are in control of your situation.   You are feeling very content or you are working out how you may reach a state of contentment in the future.

In a negative position this card can indicate a lack of focus leading to paralysis and disruption. The Emperor’s need for power may lead him or her to disregard the feelings of others.
